Narcolepsy is a neurological disease that causes problems in controlling sleep and wakefulness, causing people to experience excessive drowsiness during the day and sometimes to suddenly fall into uncontrollable sleep. It may cause side effects such as headache, anxiety, and insomnia.
Narcolepsy is a neurological disease that causes problems in controlling sleep and wakefulness. People experience excessive drowsiness during the day and sometimes fall into sudden, uncontrollable sleep.
Effect
Modafinil improves wakefulness in patients complaining of excessive drowsiness due to narcolepsy. Although its exact pharmacological action is unknown, it is said to produce an awakening effect by increasing the concentration of dopamine in the brain.
Modafinil has a stimulant effect similar to other sympathomimetics, but unlike these drugs, it does not appear to affect the secretion of dopamine or norepinephrine, and therefore has fewer side effects.
How to take
Take 200 mg orally once a day in the morning. (Dosing of 400 mg once a day was well tolerated, but there is no clear evidence that it has a better effect than 200 mg.)
Caution
- Pregnant women, lactating women, and children cannot take this drug.
- Do not administer to patients with moderate to severe hypertension or arrhythmia.
- Patients with anxiety should take modafinil only under the direction of a professional. Additionally, patients who have or have suffered from depression, mania, or other mental disorders may experience worsening symptoms when taking modafinil.
- Women of childbearing potential should plan contraception before taking modafinil.
- Patients with cardiovascular disease should take modafinil with caution. Patients with high blood pressure should have their blood pressure and heart rate checked while taking modafinil. Additionally, if you have cardiovascular problems, your heart condition should be checked. Patients with a history of left ventricular hypertrophy or who have had heart valve problems due to past administration of central nervous system stimulants are advised not to take modafinil.
- Patients with epilepsy or those who have experienced epilepsy should take modafinil with caution as it may increase the risk of seizures.
- Since modafinil is metabolized in the liver, patients with liver dysfunction may have difficulty metabolizing it, resulting in increased blood levels. Therefore, administration should be started from a low dose.
- Modafinil is mostly excreted through urine, and only 1% is excreted through feces. Therefore, patients with renal dysfunction should take it with caution because there is a risk of delayed excretion.
