Imiquimod, the active ingredient contained in the generic Aldara Cream, promotes the production of IFN-α, which is involved in the immune response, and suppresses the increase of human papilloma virus, the cause of condyloma acuminatum, while simultaneously producing various cytokines (immune proteins secreted by cells) that activate cellular immune responses and damage human papillomavirus-infected cells. In addition, it improves solar keratosis by activating the natural immune system and cellular immune response and promoting apoptosis (natural death of cells).
